October Crystal Of The Month: Amethyst The Calming Stone

Amethyst~the Calming Stone

Amethyst is a stone that most of us have been drawn to since we were kiddos.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s purple & a favorite, high vibrational color we resonate with at a very early age. I remember my very first ring from Santa was an Amethyst. I got it when I was in story hour (now called preschool) when I was around 4 years old & I still have it in my jewelry box today. Purple is a magickal color that even Royalty has long been aware of.

Legend tells us this story of how Amethyst came about

“The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend. The wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. The unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the ferocious beasts sprang, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.”

Amethyst is probably best known as the “calming stone”

You can wear Amethyst as jewelry or carry a stone in your pocket or place it in any space you are looking to be calm about. I’ve always kept an Amethyst (& rose quartz) on my nightstand next to my bed.  Many years ago I learned from a crystal healer how to grid my bed for better sleep.  She taught me that to place 4 Amethyst stones in the 4 corners of your bed & one rose quartz in the center. You do this on your box springs or on the floor under your mattress. As I always tell my husband, “It’s not going to hurt thing, so why not try it?” Do no harm is always a good rule to live by I think. Many moons ago, a good herbalist friend of mine couldn’t get her baby to sleep well.  She’d tried everything & finally decided to grid under the crib with amethyst & she swore that it worked the first night & there on.  Amethyst is said to help cope with responsibility, dispelling nervousness, tension & over-sensitivity. It has been used to encourage & support sobriety. It helps to “cut the cord” between yourself & addictions of both substances & people. While anyone can benefit from the healing Amethyst stone it has been connecting to the month of February as a birthstone & to the astrological signs of: Pisces, Virgo, Aquarius & Capricorn. When working with the Chakra system there are a couple of schools of thoughts on where to place Amethyst.  This depends if you associate the 3rd eye or crown chakra with the vibrational color of purple or white. Some say to place this stone on your 3rd Eye for more vision & direction to see what best path awaits you. Others say place on your crown chakra (the place where you head is soft as a baby you your skull grows together) to connect spiritually with your higher source, creator, god, great spirit, allah, krishna, ganesh, mother earth, divine goddess or whatever belief system you are called to. Considered a “stone of meditation”, Amethyst helps one calm the monkey mind within.
